Phases of Union Pacific AC4400/C44AC-CTEs.

A side by side guide to UP AC4400's and C44AC-CTE's.

Telling the difference between UP AC4400's (AC4400CW), from SP, CNW & UP, plus UP C44AC-CTE's (AC4400CW-CTE), in short.

Again, in the quest to find myself a UP unit to model, this time a AC4400CW, I've started mapping out the differences and "phases" of UP AC4400CW's and C44AC-CTE's. This list may be incomplete, please excuse me if something is missing or wrong. [Ed. Current to 2008] I hope to get some input to make the list way more specific.

I picked up an Athearn HO AC4400 with three dynamic brake vents so I now need to find one with 3 on UP's roster. I chose UP 6717
because I like the winged shield on it. I plan to model at least 2 more of these units, one of the 3 UP delivered, and one in C&NW paint.

- All C44AC-CTE's are referred to this way as they have a
Controlled Tractive Effort add-on. All have two dynamic brake vents.

- All Ex. SP AC4400CW's have two dynamic brake vents. Some have been repainted in to various UP schemes, some are only patched. Not a single one exists in full SP paint w/o a patch as of article date [2008]. Two units received erroneous schemes see notes 1 & 2 below.

- Only 3 UP AC4400CW's were delivered with three dynamic brake vents.

- All Ex. C&NW AC4400CW's have three dynamic brake vents. Some repainted, others not. All are at least patched as of time of article, and ones still in C&NW sport Operation Lifesaver paint. One unit was repainted but still has Operation Life saver paint, see note 3 below the list [as of 2008].
